Decommissioned ACY Airport to Cecome Formula 1 Racetrack
A development project to convert an old airport in Atlantic City into a Formula 1 racetrack and commercial complex worth $2.7 billion has received approval from the city council.
According to the Greater Atlantic City Chamber, the proposed plan includes a 2.44-mile Formula 1-only racecourse surrounded by numerous retail and commercial establishments and hundreds of condominiums. The design would incorporate approximately 10.8 megawatts of solar panels on condo rooftops and other available roof space.
Construction would take six to nine years and create between 1,200 and 1,500 permanent jobs. Bader Field, which was one of the first airports in the US and opened in 1910, has been closed since 2006 and is owned by the city. Mayor Marty Small is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday to symbolically sign the agreement.
